Props and Set Dec Identification:

Future-Past.com Props

The Battlestar Galactica series presents a wide range of real world objects used by the prop department and set decoration to create the illusion of a futuristic yet some what familiar society. The following is just a small sampling of the items used.

Read my exclusive interviews with Ken Hawryliw, Battlestar Galactica Prop Master, and a whole host of cast and crew about the props created and used in the series.

Props

A prop, short for property, is any object touched or held by an actor in accordance to script requirements or as deemed by the director for use in furthering the plot or story line of a scene. Smaller props are referred to as "hand props".

Set Dec

Set Decoration (Set Dec) includes the furnishings, wallpaper, lighting fixtures, and many of the other objects that will be seen in the scene. Props and set dec often overlap, but are provided by different departments. The difference between a set decoration and a prop is use. If the item is not touched by an actor for any reason it is simply a set decoration. Some set dec, such as a chair or table, can be touched by actors but would still be set decoration. Often times discussions take place between set decorator and prop masters in order to check that everything is being covered.

Wardrobe

Wardrobe is responsible for the appearance of the characters in a scene. This usually involves designing or choosing clothing, footwear, hats and helmets for the actors to wear, but it may also include designing other unusual forms, such as the Flight Suits.

Weapons

Weapon props including but not limited to firearms, knives, swords, bows, and staff weapons are handled on set by the Armorer or Weapons Master. The Armorer is present whenever a scene with a weapon is to be shot. Armorers ensure that the weapons under their control do not cause harm to the cast, crew or production property. They also ensure the weapons can achieve the director's goals in terms of appearance and function, and continuity requirements are meet for the production.
